    Top Surgery Permanent Changes

Chest reconstruction top surgery, also known as “top surgery” and formerly “FTM top surgery”, is a life-changing and permanent decision and it is important to understand the potential risks and outcomes prior to pursuing the procedure. In this article, we discuss the criteria some patients must meet prior to their top surgery including age, health, and recommendation letters. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge to help yourself be more informed about your decision and be ready for your gender confirming surgery.

A lot of transmasculine, non-binary, and gender expansive folks feel dysphoric and/or discomfort associated with their chest and/or breast size. If this describes your experience, then it may be time to consider chest reconstruction top surgery or “top” surgery. Top surgery is a permanent procedure that can greatly enhance your confidence and self-esteem.

Because top surgery is a permanent procedure, it is important that you consider the final outcome very carefully. You should be nearly 100% committed before undergoing this sort of bodily change. Additionally, most patients must meet the following guidelines:

    • At least 18 years of age or older
    • In good physical and psychological health
    • Have an understanding of the risks and trade-offs associated with surgery

In addition, in order to access payment, most insurance policies require that you:

    • Possess a letter of recommendation from a psychologist or other mental health professional

Knowing When You’re Ready for Permanent Change

Top surgery is more complicated than simply removing your breasts – it’s a life-changing decision. This means that you should consider all of your options before undertaking top surgery.

Top surgery is a very personal decision that should not be based on anyone else’s expectations of you or your body. You should only commit to surgery when you feel completely ready to do so.

Prior to undergoing top surgery, you may want to work with a therapist to determine your goals and expectations.

If you still feel unsure about surgery, Dr. Mosser would be more than happy to discuss the benefits and risks with you during a one-on-one consultation.

During your consultation, you will also have the opportunity to ask questions and to view our gallery of before and after photos. You should have a solid base knowledge of your selected procedure well in advance of surgery.

    Results of Top Surgery:

In Dr. Mosser’s experience, the vast majority of patients experience a release of stress related to dysphoria of the chest. Of course, there is always the possibility that you will be unhappy with your final outcome. The same holds true for nearly any cosmetic procedure.

Top surgery is permanent and cannot be reversed. Your chest will never look the same as it did before surgery. For this reason, it is important that you are sure of your goals prior to undergoing surgery.
