    Gender Transition

Gender identity – whether you identify as a woman, man, transgender and/or gender non-conforming – is a basic element that helps define an individual’s sense of self. Though it’s difficult to pinpoint a definition that satisfies both the medical community and the transgender community, the term gender dysphoria (formerly gender identity disorder) is used to describe a mental health condition individuals who do not identify with the sex and gender they were designated at birth have.

Myths and misconceptions about transgender individuals are all too common. Most people, even those who are well-intentioned, are simply uninformed about gender identification, how the social and medical transition process works, or the hormonal and surgical treatment options currently available.

    Transgender Chest Surgery

When transgender patients choose to pursue surgery as part of their gender transition, they need the services of a board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Mosser who has the necessary training, education and expertise to successfully perform transgender surgery.

Many (but not all) transgender and gender non-conforming people will have at least one surgical procedure in their lifetime related to gender transition. One of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures for transgender individuals is chest surgery, either MTF breast augmentation (to create a more feminine upper body) or FTM chest reconstruction (to create a more masculine upper body).

    The Best Candidates for Surgery

Gaining approval for chest reconstruction or breast augmentation can be a multi-stage process that can involve various health professionals and health insurance organizations. Because both of these procedures are permanent, a reputable plastic surgeon will determine a candidate’s eligibility based on a variety of factors.

Generally speaking, candidates for surgery will meet the criteria below:

    • Are physically and psychologically healthy
    • Have a letter of recommendation from a mental health professional
    • Possess realistic goals and expectations

Your chosen plastic surgeon is medically, ethically and legally responsible for your well-being. Each potential patient must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to ensure that surgery will likely improve their quality of life.
