For many transwomen and transfeminine non-binary people, breast augmentation is an important step in gender transition and expression. Male-to-female (MTF) breast augmentation is often the first surgery people seek out. Breast augmentation, otherwise known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that uses saline or silicone breast implants to enhance breast size and shape.
Many studies show that breast augmentation can enhance both physical and emotional well- being. Each patient has their own subjective view of beauty, so your final results will largely depend on your own cosmetic goals and expectations. Your body type will also play a role in your final outcome.
Choosing an experienced FTM breast surgeon like Dr. Mosser is the best way to ensure natural-looking results. During the consultation process, Dr. Mosser will work with you to achieve the results you want based in large part on your anatomy ( chest shape, skin elasticity and existing breast tissue).
When envisioning your final results, it’s important to keep your expectations realistic. While natural-looking results are often achieved through MTF breast augmentation, there’s no way to be absolutely sure how your final results will look. In general, surgically augmented breasts are typically firmer, rounder and slightly further apart than natural breasts.
It’s also important to note that age plays a part. If you have breast augmentation when you’re older, your chest will appear more youthful than other women in your age bracket. This is because your breasts have not been subjected to the effects of aging and gravity.
Dr. Mosser will work closely with you to determine your optimal size based on your cosmetic preferences and body type. Breast implants come in a range of sizes and are based on the amount of fluid or gel in the implant itself (typically 125cc-600cc). During your consultation with Dr. Mosser, you’ll have the chance to try on various implant sizers to determine which size looks best under clothing.
It’s always a good idea to bring a photo to your consultation that depicts your preferred final results. When selecting images, choose individuals with a body shape that closely resembles your own. If they are before and after images, try also to select photos where the ‘before’ anatomy is similar to your current anatomy.
Because female areolas are usually larger than male areolas, many patients who seek breast augmentation are interested in the possibility of areola resizing. Though it’s certainly possible, the additional incisions and resulting scars necessary to resize the areolas usually do not justify an additional procedure. You may consider tattooing to increase areolar size non-surgically.
A minority of patients have a breast lift in addition to breast augmentation. If you choose this route, your areolas will be resized and repositioned in the surgical process.
