Hair Transplants and Laser Hair Removal

For many trans, non-binary, and gender-expansive people, hair transplants and laser hair removal are important parts of medical transitioning. As of March 2020, we are proud to start offering both of these services on-site in our San Francisco office.

Hair transplants have been shown to reduce gender dysphoria related to hairlines and high foreheads for trans women, trans feminine, and non-binary people. And laser hair removal is often used by trans folks to remove hair follicles in areas on the body that are impacted by bottom surgery and/or by feminine-spectrum trans people who experience dysphoria related to hair growth on their face or body.

Getting hair transplants and laser hair removal at the Gender Confirmation Center

If you find yourself in one of the categories listed above, we would love to help you move forward with your transition-related goals. The insurance advocacy team at the Gender Confirmation Center is excited to work with patients to petition insurance companies to cover these services. Please contact our office to find out if your insurance company covers these services.

Just as with surgery, in order for insurance companies to agree to cover these costs, you need to provide our staff with a letter from a licensed mental health professional that outlines your specific need for hair transplants and/or laser hair removal based on experiences with gender dysphoria related to those procedures. After you provide us with the letter and a copy of your insurance, we will get back to you with information on how much your insurance will cover and how much you will be asked to pay out of pocket.

If getting hair transplants and/or laser hair removal will reduce your experience with dysphoria and you do not currently have a mental health provider, you can use the WPATH Provider Search tool to find someone in your area who is equipped to write you a letter of recommendation.

Please note that we are still in the early stages of providing these services in our office. While we can’t promise that your insurance company will agree to cover any or all of the cost of getting hair transplants or laser hair removal, our staff is here to work with you and your insurance to the best of our ability. The more we’re able to advocate for coverage with insurance companies, the better equipped we will be to offer these services moving forward.
