Breast Augmentation and Reversibility

Breast augmentation top surgery, formerly referred to as MTF breast augmentation, is a surgical procedure that can leave permanent changes on your body. In this article, we will discuss breast augmentation top surgery and its reversibility, as well as long-term effects such as scarring, skin changes, and possible back pain. While it is natural to have concerns about your final outcome, we hope the information we provide can help ease some of your worries.

Though the decision to undergo breast augmentation surgery can dramatically enhance your confidence and sense of self, it’s a life-changing decision that requires careful thought and consideration. Breast augmentation is a very personal decision that shouldn’t be based on someone else’s expectations of your body, and you should always take the time to consider all of your options.

Regret is a common fear among most patients prior to surgery. It’s normal to experience hesitation in the face of a big change!

The best way to prevent unwanted or unexpected changes is to be well informed and prepared. Our practice uses an informed consent model, where we engage in full discussion about your surgery. Being as educated as possible about your options can help you to feel more confident in your decision. The more you and your surgeon communicate about your goals, the better equipped we will be to help you.

Is breast augmentation reversible?

Though uncommon, it is  possible to reverse a breast augmentation. However, it’s important to note that your chest  will probably never look as it once did. Over time, your chest tissue will stretch out to accommodate the implants. If you choose to have them removed, it is likely that you will have a significant amount of loose or sagging skin. A removal of some skin later on may be necessary to adjust the appearance of your chest.

Another important factor to consider is scarring. Scars are permanent marks on the body, which means they will still be present if you remove your implants.

Will my new breasts cause long-term back pain?

Though it’s possible to experience back pain with very large implants, it’s unlikely following a breast augmentation. In most instances, back pain results from large breasts that droop, creating a gravitational pull against the back that acts as a sort of ‘leverage,’ compounding back discomfort. Unlike breast tissue, implants stay in their place in the upper region of the chest.
