Laser hair removal (LHR) can be an important part of medical gender transition for many members of the trans, non-binary, and gender-expansive communities. In order to better serve our patients, we now offer LHR in our downtown San Francisco office.
Laser hair removal is often used by trans folks to remove hair follicles in areas on the body to prepare for bottom surgery and/or to reduce experiences with gender dysphoria related to hair growth.
At The Gender Confirmation Center, our Clarity laser works with all skin tones and our office only serves the larger trans and gender-diverse community. If LHR would help reduce your experiences with dysphoria and/or help you prepare for bottom surgery, our staff would be happy to help you schedule an appointment in our office. We have an Insurance Advocacy Team at The Gender Confirmation Center whose goal is to petition insurance companies to cover laser hair removal in addition to the other surgical and non-surgical services we offer. To move forward with appointment scheduling and to kick off the insurance approval process, go to our “Contact Us” page and tick the box for laser hair removal or simply call our office.
In order for insurance companies to agree to cover costs associated with gender-affirming care, they will usually ask for a letter from a licensed mental health professional that clearly states your specific need for LHR based on experiences with gender dysphoria related to that procedure. Once you provide our office with the letter and a copy of your insurance card, we will work with your insurance provider and then tell you how much your insurance will cover and how much you will be asked to pay out of pocket. If you do not currently have a mental health provider and you need a certified provider letter, the WPATH Provider Search tool can be used to find someone in your area who might specialize in gender-affirming care. We can’t promise that your insurance company will agree to cover any or all of the cost LHR, but our staff is here to work with your insurance to the fullest extent that we can.
If you have never had LHR before, read our page on what to expect during a laser session to learn more. Also, check out our pages on how to manage pain associated with laser hair removal, the benefits of laser, and the difference between laser hair removal and electrolysis.
